Alex Iwobi has expressed tacit confidence that his country will make it to Russia come the 2018 World Cup.
Iwobi expressed such optimism despite the fact Nigeria is grouped in what is rather a ‘death zone’ considering their opponents.
Recently, the Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations which has heightened the cynicism from sports pundits.
However, the Arsenal hitman is confident that Nigeria will qualify for 2018 Fifa World Cup despite the tough group.[The Super Eagles are stuck with Zambia, Algeria and Cameroon in Group B in the qualifying rounds of Russia 2018.]
He lamented the team’s exit from the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations but feels the fresh target is a ticket to the World Cup.
“The Nations Cup is the biggest sporting tournament in Africa, so we were gutted.
“But as a team we have to look forward and focus on the World Cup and our qualification matches,” Iwobi told Fifa.com
“It is a tough group for sure, but I don’t think there are any easy groups – it’s international level competition.
“I’m confident we can prevail.
“We definitely have the players to. If we prepare well, focus and play to the best of our ability I’m sure we will qualify,” he said further.
“All the teams [in the group] are good teams that have been former AFCON winners.
“They have players playing at the highest level, so we know we’ll be up against well-prepared teams,” he concluded.
Nigeria kick off their campaign against Zambia in October before hosting Algeria later in the year.
Meanwhile, his team mates have progressed to the quarter-finals at the Men’s Olympic Football Tournament, Rio 2016, after a 1-0 victory over Sweden in Group B.
In the opening match, Nigeria defeated Japan 5-4 after barely landing in Brazil following flight delay in the United States.
The Nigerian team landed few hours before the match and shot their way into victory, with Oghenekaro Etebo scoring four times to secure victory for his country.
